Located in the iron-mining region, the Lohars of Bastar have age-old skills in metallurgy. That is noticeable in the creation of wrought iron human figures, having simplicity of expression. The various clans of Lohars—Sodi, Netam, Poyam, Arkam, Marai, Nevra, Halami, Baghe and Mandavi living in Bastar forge their own tools for creating masks for Maria dances, the lamps for the Marias and Murias. Deepaks (a large lamp-like installations) made of small holders, birds, animals and leaf-like arrangement. Being ironsmiths, the ‘dhunka sar’ has a place of honor in the house.

Natural products such as wood, metal and leather are meant for hardy use and products such as furniture, objects, decorative items etc. , have for ever been used by the poor and the rich, the only variation being that of refinement and embellishment. These can be exposed to moisture, water and sun but must always be dried well and then keep free of dust and grime. The colors will always transform or fade when exposed to the elects and that is a great part of the charm of natural products.
